Rise + Shine 

Some objects take themselves seriously. Rise + Shine doesn't. Squeeze the rubber bulb and the candle rises; twist the release knob and it sinks back into its aluminium cylinder. It's a height-adjustable candleholder that's cheerfully, unmistakably suggestive — a joke it makes with a completely straight face. Behind the wink is real mechanical craft: inspired by a set of idiosyncratic 19th-century candleholders at the Barnes Foundation, and made in a tiny local batch in Brooklyn for Paraphernalia: Desire during NYCxDesign 2025. Sometimes you just have to surrender to the irony of the simple.

The designer — Dan McMahon (Brooklyn, NY) Dan McMahon is a Brooklyn-born, London-trained designer (Camberwell College of Arts). He designs with his hands first  materials and fabrication lead, and the ideas arrive through research, experimentation and prototyping.
